Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain have locked all entry gates to Nagar Bhaban, the headquarters of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), effectively suspending administrative and public services.
Witnesses said the gates were locked around 9:00am on Saturday in protest of delays in Hossain’s assumption of mayoral duties, despite the Election Commission issuing a gazette on April 27 in line with a court order.
Protesters claimed they installed a total of 65 locks across the building’s entrances. The Local Government Division office, also located within Nagar Bhaban, remained closed throughout the day.
Staff of the DSCC reportedly participated in the demonstration. An executive engineer confirmed that services at 10 regional offices were disrupted, as officials were barred from entering the premises.
Demonstrators declared adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and his secretary Rezaul Maksud Jahedi unwelcome at Nagar Bhaban. The day’s protest concluded at approximately 1:30pm.
Former Senior Secretary Moshiur Rahman, speaking on behalf of the group “Dhakabashi” -- which organised the demonstration -- announced that the protest would continue on Sunday.
