Panchagarh is experiencing a mild cold wave, with heavy fog and winter chill dampening daily life in the district.
For several days, the temperature has remained below 10 degrees Celsius. Even when the sun can be seen, its light and heat are dim.
The district’s Weather Monitoring Centre in Tentulia recorded a temperature of 9.3 degrees Celsius at 9am on Sunday, according to Senior Observer Jitendranath Roy.
When temperatures across an area are between 8.1 degrees Celsius to 10 degrees Celsius, it is considered to be a mild cold wave, he said.
At 9am on Saturday, the district had recorded a temperature of 9.2 degrees Celsius. On Friday, the mercury had dipped as low as 8.4 degrees Celsius.
The cold has paralysed the entire district, with the chill bringing public life to a standstill in some areas. The cold is usually sharper from the evening to 10am in the morning.
The low temperatures are causing great difficulties for those who depend on a daily income or engage in physical labour.
Many are having difficulty getting to work on time, reports bdnews24.com.
Though the temperature rises slightly as the day progresses, the chill starts to set in as the afternoon wears on.
Thick fog shrouds the roads from nightfall to the morning, making trouble for drivers. They have to proceed carefully with their headlights glaring to avoid any sudden accidents.
Jainal, an agricultural worker from Boda Upazila’s Titopara identified by a single name, said the sunshine brought a bit of warmth on Sunday, but the nights have become hard to endure because of the frosty wind.
Senior Observer Jitendranath said that temperatures may remain low for a few more days during the winter season, but expressed the hope that the sunshine would make things a bit more bearable during the day.
