Justice Obaidul Hassan, the senior most judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, has been appointed as the new Chief Justice (CJ) of the country.
The President appointed Justice Obaidul Hassan, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Bangladesh in line with Article 95(1) of the Constitution, the Law Ministry said in a notification on Tuesday.
The appointment will take effect after taking his oath, read the notification issued by Law Secretary Md Golam Sarwar.
The incumbent Chief Justice, Hasan Foez Siddique, will retire on September 25, having reached the age limit of 67 years for a Supreme Court judge. Justice Obaidul Hassan will become the 24th Chief Justice of the country.
Justice Obaidul Hassan was born on January 11 in 1959.
He obtained BSS (Hons) and MSS (Economics) degrees, as well as LLB, from the University of Dhaka. He was enrolled as an advocate of the District Court, the High Court Division and the Appellate Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court on March 18 in 1986, October 18 in 1988 and August 15 in 2005 respectively.
He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division on June 30 in 2009 and appointed Judge of the same division on June 6 in 2011.
Justice Obaidul Hassan served both as a member and the chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal (BD)-2 from March 23 in 2012 to December 12 in 2012, and from December 13 in 2012 to September 15 in 2015 respectively. He delivered as many as 11 (Eleven) judgments with fellow judges at the International Crimes Tribunal (BD)-2.
He was elevated to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on September 3 in 2020, where he delivered numerous Judgments including the one related to Arpita Sompotti Ain, and the appointment of Judges to the High Court Division.
Justice Obaidul Hassan participated in an international conference held in Hong Kong in 1991 and a training programme called "Judicial Governance Program" held in Singapore in July 2015.
Furthermore, he attended an International Conference on "International Crimes/State Crimes" held in Buenos Ayres, Argentina, in August 2015, and engaged in a view exchange programme with the judges of International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Crimes Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in Hague, Netherlands, in August 2015.
Justice Obaidul Hassan also had the opportunity to visit several countries, including China, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Argentina, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Dubai, and Turkey.
