Professor AKM Ilias is set to be appointed as the first administrator of the interim administration formed to oversee seven government colleges in Dhaka city.
A member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) confirmed the development.
As Professor Ilias’ job tenure had ended, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification on Sunday appointing him as principal of Dhaka College for a two-year term on a contractual basis.
According to reports, the principal of any of the seven colleges may serve as the administrator of the interim body, which has been tasked with managing the colleges until a new university is established to incorporate them under a single entity.
The seven government colleges are: Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College
Together, these colleges have around 200,000 regular students and employ over 1,000 teachers.
Previously under the National University, the colleges were affiliated with Dhaka University on February 17, 2017.
However, since the affiliation, students had staged protests over issues such as delayed examinations and irregular result publication.
Amid continued student agitation, Dhaka University announced in January its decision to separate from the colleges.
The government then decided to establish a new institution, Dhaka Central University, to incorporate the seven colleges under a single entity.
