A woman was killed and her sister injured after a bus rammed the two while crossing the road on Dhaka’s Pragati Sarani.

The workers on the bus fled after the accident on Wednesday, leaving the vehicle in the middle of the road. People nearby then blocked the road in protest, leading to heavy traffic congestion.

HM Shafiqur Rahman, assistant commissioner of the police’s Badda Zone, said that a woman identified with the single name Irene was killed and her sister injured when they were struck by an Akash Paribahan bus as they crossed the road. Irene had worked for an organisation called Next Ventures, according to a bdnews24.com report.

Saiful Islam, who went to the scene after the accident, said that the bus driver and their assistant fled after the accident at 9:30 am, leaving the vehicle on the road. The woman who was killed was stuck under the bus for some time, but the body was eventually recovered by the crowd nearby.

The woman who was killed worked for an organisation nearby. Her co-workers and locals then blocked the road in protest, which led to congestion, Saiful said.

He added that traffic began moving on the road around 11:45 am.
