Russia slams Israel’s attack on Iran at UN Security Council meeting

Russia has strongly criticised Israel’s recent military actions against Iran, accusing it of showing "clear contempt" for diplomatic efforts and violating the principles of the United Nations Charter, as per Al-jazeera.

Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Friday, Russian envoy Vasily Nebenzya said Israel had unilaterally attacked the sovereign state of Iran without showing any respect for international law or the UN Charter.

In his speech, Nebenzya made several key points:

  • Iran’s peaceful civilian nuclear facilities remain under threat of attack, which could push the world towards an unprecedented nuclear disaster.

  • The UN Security Council must deliver an impartial assessment of the situation and seek appropriate solutions.

  • Israel carried out the strikes at a time when indirect talks between Washington and Tehran were underway, and preparations for the sixth round of negotiations were in progress.

  • Israel not only disregarded diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme but also showed disrespect towards its closest ally, the United States, which is still advocating for a negotiated settlement.

  • Iran’s nuclear facilities are under the strict supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), operating in compliance with international monitoring protocols.

  • By launching a unilateral attack on a sovereign nation, Israel ignored the assessments of this specialised international body (IAEA) and violated the principles of the UN Charter.

Nebenzya urged the Security Council to take the matter seriously and act to prevent further escalation in the region.
