Two people in Bangladesh have been killed by gunfire from across the border in Myanmar amid the ongoing conflict between the forces of the military junta and insurgent groups.
One of the dead was identified as 55-year-old Hosne Ara a resident of the Ghumdhum area. The other is a Myanmar national identified as a Rohingya. Additional details on the second victim’s identity were not available.
Hosne Ara was struck and killed by a bullet shot from across the border in Myanmar on Monday afternoon, said Anowarul Islam, a representative of Ghumdum Union’s Ward No. 5.
She had been having lunch at home when she was hit.
“There has been repeated gunfire, sometimes intermittent and sometimes constant, in the Ghumdhum area since dawn,” Islam said.
“A fire was spotted at the Dhekibonia BGP camp on the other side of the border in Myanmar from the Ghumdhum area around 3 pm. Shots were fired from a helicopter hovering in the Myanmar sky at this point. Border residents are terrified. They are trying to take shelter with nearby relatives and loved ones as best as they can manage.”
