Call for Research Proposals: IGC Bangladesh Young Economist Conference

The call for research proposals from Bangladeshi students to be presented at the upcoming conference titled "Resilient and Resurgent Bangladesh: Sustaining Economic Growth in a Changing Climate" is pleased to be announced. The conference will be held in Dhaka on July 19th and 20th, 2023.

This conference provides a valuable opportunity for presenters to receive feedback on their research and gain insights into important policy issues from policymakers. The aim is to foster a culture of research among young students of economics, public policy, development studies, and related fields in Bangladesh. Participants will also have the chance to network with economists from leading universities.

Five participants will be selected to make 15-minute presentations and receive feedback from renowned economists and researchers attending the seminar. Complete research projects are welcomed, but the submission of early-stage research proposals with a clearly defined research idea and a sound methodology is also encouraged.

Research Themes:

The research focus of the IGC (International Growth Centre) revolves around sustainable growth policies in developing countries. Sustainable growth entails the inclusive development of a country, which improves social, environmental, and economic well-being for all, including future generations. In collaboration with government partners and other stakeholders, we strive to prioritize sustainable and inclusive growth as a key component of "building back better" from the pandemic. It is increasingly evident that job creation, income enhancement, poverty reduction, resilience to climate shocks, and the decarbonization of energy supply and production are interconnected and crucial for the well-being of current and future generations.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for participation, the presenter must meet the following criteria:

• Must be a Bangladeshi citizen residing in Bangladesh.
• The team member presenting at the conference must be currently enrolled in an academic program or have been enrolled on or after June 30, 2018.

Selection Criteria:

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Relevance of the research to policy making in Bangladesh.
• Contribution to the existing literature.
• The soundness of the research design.

Application Process:

In addition to providing information about the research team, the application form consists of two main questions.

• Research Summary: Please outline the research question(s) and context. For example, if you are researching the economic impact of tax breaks on export-oriented industries, clearly state the specific research question, which policies the research pertains to, the industries the research addresses, and why this research is important. Explain how your research can contribute to policy-making in Bangladesh and the wider academic literature, among other relevant aspects.
• Research Design: Please provide a clear explanation of the research methodology, identification strategy, sampling plan (if applicable), and any other relevant details regarding the research design.
