Overview

The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is inviting applications for its Academy Scholars Program. This prestigious program supports outstanding scholars in the early stages of their academic careers. It seeks individuals whose work demonstrates excellence in a social science discipline combined with deep knowledge and language proficiency concerning regions outside the United States and Canada. Successful candidates will produce scholarship that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries, addressing comparative, transnational, or domestic issues, whether historical or contemporary.

The Academy Scholars Program fosters a community of resourceful, innovative, and original scholars poised for successful careers in academia or international institutions. Selected Academy Scholars will benefit from substantial financial and research support, fostering significant research projects and skills development in their chosen fields. They will also participate in dinners, seminars, and informal gatherings to explore interdisciplinary approaches to their work. Mentorship will be provided by Harvard Academy Senior Scholars, who also serve on the selection committee and support the Scholars' Scholars' professional development.

The Harvard Academy values diversity and welcomes applicants from varied backgrounds, perspectives, and methodologies.

Eligibility 

The program is open to recent PhD recipients and advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences. Eligible candidates must:

  • Have received their PhD or equivalent doctoral degree within two years of the start date (August 1, 2025).
  • Be advanced doctoral candidates able to provide degree conferral documentation by June 30, 2025.
  • I have not held or completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship.

Terms 

  • Each year, five or six Academy Scholars will be selected for two-year in-residence appointments.
  • Annual stipend: $80,000.
  • The fellowship must begin no later than the fall following the postdoctoral offer.
  • A one-time leave of up to 12 months between the two years is permitted for tenure-track teaching positions.
  • Academy Scholars cannot accept other funding, awards, or obligations during their appointment.

Application Process 

All application materials must be submitted by September 20, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted. The application must include:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Including a list of publications.
  2. Research Proposal: Maximum 2000 words, outlining intellectual objectives and planned methodologies.
  3. Writing Sample: A scholarly work such as a PhD dissertation chapter or a single-authored peer-reviewed journal article, up to 50 pages in English.
  4. PhD Program Transcript.
  5. Three Letters of Recommendation: To be uploaded directly and confidentially by the recommender by the application deadline.
