Actress Apu Biswas gets bail in attempted murder case

A court has granted bail to Dhallywood actress Apu Biswas in an attempted murder case stemming from an incident during last year's July Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman issued the order following a hearing on Sunday.

Apu's lawyer Abul Bashar Kamrul said the actress had secured a six-week anticipatory bail from the High Court on Jun 2, reports bdnews24.com.

In accordance with the court’s directive, she appeared before the Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and submitted her bail documents. On Sunday, she formally surrendered and sought bail, which the court approved.

The case was filed in March by a man named Enamul Haque, who accused 283 individuals of attempted murder during the July Movement. The complaint was submitted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka.

Following a court order, the case began the process of being formally recorded as an FIR on Apr 29, according to Inspector Sujan Haque of Vatara Police Station.

The case names ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina along with 17 film and television artists, including actresses Nusraat Faria, Apu Biswas, Nipun Akter, Ashna Habib Bhabna, and actor Zayed Khan.

Faria was arrested on May 18 and sent to jail the following day. She was granted bail on May 20.

According to the case documents, during the anti-government protest on Jul 19, 2024, demonstrators had gathered outside Vatara Police Station when shots were allegedly fired at them. Enamul claims he was shot in the leg and received treatment in the hospital.

The complaint further alleges that the actors and actresses named in the case opposed the anti-discrimination movement and financially supported the deposed Awami League government.
