AI resurrects Cyberpunk 2077 voice actor in unique tribute

Amidst the ongoing debates surrounding the ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creative industries, a unique case emerges that showcases this technology's sensitive and thoughtful application. While AI has been criticised for its less-than-ideal impact on various sectors, one particular instance demonstrates a more nuanced and respectful approach.

Cyberpunk 2077, the highly acclaimed title marred by controversies, has taken a distinctive step. Miłogost Reczek, the voice actor behind Viktor Vektor in the game, passed away in 2021. Vektor, a ripperdoc and confidant of the protagonist, played a pivotal role in the game's Phantom Liberty expansion.

As CD Projekt Red (CDPR) prepared to extend the Cyberpunk 2077 universe with the Phantom Liberty expansion, they faced a dilemma. Reczek's character, though not central, had significant lines, particularly in one of the endings.

The initial contemplation involved possibly replacing him, but CDPR decided against it, recognising the importance of preserving Reczek's memory and exceptional performance.

Here's where AI enters the narrative. With advancements in AI technology, CDPR explored the option of recreating Reczek's performance to fulfil the needs of the expansion.

However, what sets this apart from AI's contentious uses is that CDPR sought and obtained permission from Reczek's family. According to a Bloomberg report, Reczek's sons were "very supportive" of the idea.

This move represents a significant departure from instances where AI has been criticised for appropriating creative works without consent. The explicit permission from the deceased actor's family brings a human touch to the application of AI in this context. It also raises questions about the evolving relationship between technology and the preservation of artistic legacies.

The Phantom Liberty expansion was already one of the most awaited games. With Miłogost Reczek and Viktor Vektor's story taking an unexpected turn, the AI voice saga could further fuel excitement for the game.
