Veteran Indian actor Satish Shah, celebrated for his comic presence across film and television, has died at the age of 74.
His long-time personal assistant Ramesh Kadatala said Shah died at his home in Mumbai on Saturday, reports The Hindu.
A heart attack is suspected to be the cause of death.
Born on Jun 25, 1951, Shah trained at the Film and Television Institute of India and went on to become one of the most familiar faces in Indian comedy.
His breakout role came with Kundan Shah’s 1983 cult satire Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, where he portrayed the corrupt commissioner D’Mello alongside Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, and Pankaj Kapur.
Over a career spanning several decades, he appeared in a wide range of films including Maalamaal, Hero Hiralal, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Main Hoon Na, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Om Shanti Om, Fanaa and Akele Hum Akele Tum.
Shah was equally prominent on the small screen. His performance in Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi brought him into households across India in the 1980s. He later gained renewed popularity as the sarcastic yet doting Indravadan Sarabhai in the hit sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai.
He is survived by his wife, designer Madhu Shah.
