The Evil Dead franchise is a classic horror movie series that has captivated audiences for over four decades. Since Sam Raimi directed the first film Evil Dead in 1981, starring Bruce Campbell, the films in the franchise have gained notoriety for featuring graphic violence, grotesque imagery, and dark humour.
The franchise has remained popular for its ability to evolve and adapt to changing times. The latest film introducing new characters, new settings, and new storytelling techniques while still retaining the franchise's signature style is finally here: Evil Dead Rise, without Sam Raimi's direction but still equally frightening.
The previous instalments revolved around a group of young people who visit a cabin in the woods and unwittingly awaken an ancient evil. The franchise is known for its iconic 'Deadites', demonic creatures that possess and torment the living. This latest instalment still includes Deadites, but they infest an apartment building in Los Angeles and devastate a family and their neighbours.
Like every other Evil Dead film, the intro is chaotic and has a flashback of the events prior to the chaos. The protagonist here is not the regular Ash Williams but Beth, who visits her sister Ellie, who is a single mother of three: Danny, Bridget, and Cassie.
The children discover an underground chamber in their parking lot, and Danny finds an ancient book of death and records. Like other Evil Dead foolish characters, he plays the recitations of the book from the record and awakens the deadites, who possess Ellie.
Alyssa Sutherland plays one of the most horrifying antagonists as Ellie lures her children with a caring voice, tries to possess them with deadites, and ultimately kills them. The carnage inside their confined flat spread to other neighbours as well, with Ellie breaking out of Beth's captivity and killing every neighbour in the complex.
Deadites are known to possess the victims of the evil dead even after death. Being victims of Ellie's murderous spree, the corpses of her children and the neighbours are reanimated and hell-bent on killing Beth and Kassie by dawn.
How are they going to survive and escape from the cursed building? Director Lee Cronin shows it with no shortage of horrific imagery.
Despite its horror and violent elements, the Evil Dead franchise is also known for its humour and self-awareness, which lighten the mood and counterbalance the intense and graphic violence.
But Evil Dead Rise has little care for humour, as it wanted to depict the deadite mayhem in 97 minutes. Deadite Ellie unleashing havoc, the multi-limbed abomination, and the elevator overflowing with blood are the iconic horror signatures of this franchise.
The Evil Dead franchise has significantly impacted the horror genre and continues to captivate and terrify audiences to this day. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a newcomer to the series, this franchise is a classic example of horror films at its best, and the success of Evil Dead Rise proves it.
