German sci-fi TV shows and films are known for their mysterious and dark themes, and Netflix has been a prominent distributor of such content, including popular series like Baran bo Odar's Dark and 1899

In 2023, Netflix presents another German sci-fi show called Paradise, directed by Boris Kunz. Set in a near-future dystopia with a thrilling plot, the film delves into a world where "Time is Money."

In this grim future, people's lives are assigned a monetary value, and a multinational corporation named Aeon operates the 'Time Donation' program, allowing individuals to sell years of their lives for handsome rewards.

However, this program comes with a catch: the buyer's DNA must match the donor's.

Aeon systematically identifies desperate individuals and matches their DNA with wealthy billionaires, coercing them to donate their time in exchange for money. Consequently, the rich become younger while the poor age prematurely, all for profit.

Our protagonists, Max and Elena, are a couple, with Max working as a donation manager at Aeon. Initially, Max sees the donation program as a way to utilise the time the younger generation wastes.

Despite the hate from people for his job, he remains indifferent, as he enjoys the favour of Aeon CEO Sophie Theissen and a generous salary. But his world comes to a standstill when the shackles of time donation fall onto his life.

Elena becomes falsely accused of setting their apartment on fire, leaving her with hefty damages to pay. Aeon conveniently offers the option of using Elena's time donation to cover the debt, and Max has no choice but to comply.

Elena sacrifices 40 years of her life and transforms into a frail elderly woman. Little does Max know that Sophie orchestrated it all for her gain, using Elena's time to become younger and Europe's most powerful woman.

In retaliation, Max becomes determined to find a way to reclaim Elena's lost years, even if it means resorting to illegal means. The battle between Max and Aeon escalates when Sophie's daughter, Marie, gets involved.

However, Max and Elena are not alone in their fight against Aeon. The Adam group, a terrorist organisation, emerges to destroy the corporation and halt its exploitative practices.

Max kidnaps Marie as part of his revenge plot, but the Adam group also seeks her to reach Sophie. The film evolves into a thrilling three-way battle with adrenaline-pumping action sequences.

Although Paradise offers an exciting concept and plot, it falls short in duration. The film's potential as a captivating TV series is evident, as it combines dystopian sci-fi drama with action and thrills. It can attract various audiences, providing an enjoyable experience that explores the morality of humans and capitalist greed.

Nevertheless, Paradise offers a captivating journey into a dystopian world where time holds monetary value. With a gripping plot and intriguing characters, the film leaves audiences craving more, making it a worthwhile addition to German sci-fi entertainment.
