'Insidious' returns after five years, singing an ending tune

When talking about 2010's popular horror films, Insidious will surely come to anyone's mind. The Lambert family is continuously haunted by mysterious entities from a dark dimension called 'The Further' throughout the last four films. The demons snatch their souls for unknown purposes, and the paranormal expert Elise and her team return every time to rescue them.

After the first Insidious, Elise is killed by the possessed Lambert patriarch, and she has only appeared in flashbacks and prequels since then. But the infamous red demon isn't retiring soon, so he comes back to haunt the Lamberts' lives again. Thus, the Insidious franchise is back again after five years with Insidious: The Red Door.

This film is the direct sequel to Insidious 2, whose events happened ten years prior. Patriarch Josh Lambert is plagued by the trauma from his journey to the Further, which strained his relationship with his wife Renai and ultimately led to divorce. His relationship with his son Dalton isn't good, as he is haunted by his childhood memories while trying to lead a normal life.

Dalton tries to get into art school, so in his painting, he finds the red demon is back in his life, trying to possess him and take his soul back to the Further once again. Josh is pretty depressed about the circumstances in his life, but when he finds his son in danger, he jumps right to the rescue, as he is the only one to save Dalton from the Further.

James Wan, also famous for directing the Saw franchise, has directed this franchise from the start. But for The Red Door, he is absent, and Patrick Wilson takes his place as his directorial debut. Patrick Wilson is already a veteran actor in the horror genre and has achieved the honour of 'Scream King'. With this film, he showcases his talent as a director and plays the role of Josh Lambert. He gives his heart and soul to the film, and it's evident in his acting and directing.

Considering the sinister plot of the Darth Maul-looking demon, the way the Lamberts escape from his layer is quite anticlimactic. The demon influences Dalton through his painting, and in the end, painting is the only way Dalton can seal the nightmarish red door, aka the door to the Further. But will the Lamberts finally get their horrifying past behind them for good? Guess the fans have to wait for Thread: An Insidious Tale.
