The legal battle between famous actor Johnny Depp and actress Amber Heard in 2022 was the talk of the town for many unique aspects. Very few defamation cases like that received so much public attention as they involved the Jack Sparrow actor's fame, his verbally abusive relationship with Amber Heard, and Heard's continuous accusations of physical abuse.
The whole six-week trial of more than 200 hours was broadcasted from the courtroom of Fairfax County, Virginia, and Netflix and director Emma Cooper decided to create the docuseries of it.
The editing team painstakingly made the long trial into a three-episode series alongside numerous commentaries from spectators who attended the trial, YouTubers and armchair legal experts who closely kept tabs on the whole trial.
The series commences with the initial trial phase, set in Virginia despite both parties being from California. Depp's defamation lawsuit against Heard revolves around her Washington Post op-ed labelling him a domestic abuser. Virginia's favourable defamation laws and the newspaper's connections to the state are emphasized by legal analysts on social media.
The first episode delves into Depp's denial of physical abuse, acknowledging only verbal arguments with Heard. A notable incident is the 'feces incident', where Heard is accused of leaving faeces on Depp's bed, causing social media to dub her 'Amber Turd humorously'.
The second episode, Breaking the Internet, centres on Heard's sexual assault accusation against Depp during their honeymoon, transforming the case from defamation to domestic violence. While online commentators remain sceptical, the importance of evidence to the judge and jury is highlighted.
Since then, Depp and Heard both hurl allegations of drug addiction and mental illnesses at each other. While Heard tries to link Depp's addiction to abuse, he acknowledges his condition without solid evidence of assault. The witnesses' testimonies also support Depp's statements, except Heard's sister's. These cross-examinations culminate in the last episode, The Viral Verdict.
The last episode is all about the closing statements and the jury board's verdict. Netizens divide between Depp and Heard. Netizens divide into pro-Depp and pro-Heard camps, with Depp ultimately winning the defamation case and a $10 million fine imposed on Heard.
The majority of social media celebrates, while many experts question the social media's effect on the jurors, as the huge public support for Depp can influence their decision.
The whole objective of this docuseries was to boil down the long legal battle and social media commentaries into three short episodes. As there are no direct interviews from actual legal experts, the docuseries might seem biased in favour of Johnny Depp, and that's the negative aspect of it.
This docuseries might be worth it for anyone who wants to watch the details of the Depp vs Heard legal battle in a shorter duration.
