'The Archies' passes the benchmark as a teen musical despite prior negativity

When Indian director Zoya Akhtar released the first look of The Archies Bollywood adaptation, it raised many concerns like out-of-reality, nepotism, and so on. Most of the cast are newcomers, but they are the children or grandchildren of the famous stars of the Indian film industry.

However, the original Archies comics had a long-lasting following among the previous generation of the Indian subcontinent. So, will The Archies be a hit because of nostalgia? Or is the film set to flop due to nepotism allegations?

To make the adaptation palatable to the Indian audience, director Zoya Indianized the original Archies gang. In this film, they are part of the Anglo-Indian community, whose people have mixed Indian and British ancestry.

They created a haven for them in the secluded part of Northern India and conveniently named the place 'Riverdale', akin to the original Archie's fictional hometown.

The Archies unfolds against the picturesque backdrop of a 1960s hill station in India, transforming Riverdale into a charming locale with quaint bookshops, Shakespeare-quoting Anglo-Indian gentlemen, and a central conflict of 'public interest versus corporate interest'.

The Archies' core conflict revolves around the impending threat to Green Park, the beloved heart of Riverdale, as Veronica's obscenely wealthy parents aim to tear down the town for their interests. The teenagers, embodying the essence of the comics, embark on a spirited campaign to preserve Riverdale's old ways.

Zoya Akhtar, known for her serious and realistic films, embraces the nostalgic innocence of the Archies' world with a self-awareness that marks a departure from her previous ventures.

Despite initial reservations about star-kid status, the ensemble cast shines in their respective roles. Agastya Nanda's earnest portrayal of Archie, Vedang Raina's energetic Reggie, Khushi Kapoor's confident Betty, and Suhana Khan's sly Veronica collectively breathe life into the characters.

While the Green Park arc falls short of expectations, the chemistry between the characters and the faithful adaptation of the iconic trio remains the film's highlights.

The Archies pays homage to the beloved comic series, with meticulous attention to preserving the familiar look and essence of the characters. However, the film's weakest link lies in the execution of its central conflict, which promises intrigue but fails in delivery.

Despite pop culture references and nostalgic elements, some characters feel one-dimensional, with the film's strength in the main cast's chemistry and performances.

As the musical unfolds, with its energetic numbers and vibrant set design capturing the essence of the comics and the era, the film leaves a warm, cosy impression.

However, it falls short of the energy and detail that characterized Zoya Akhtar's previous works, particularly the acclaimed Gully Boy

The Archies stands as a delightful Christmas watch, inviting viewers into a bygone era and celebrating the spirit of the iconic comic series.

As Zoya Akhtar orchestrates this musical extravaganza, only time will reveal if she surprises the audience with her next venture.
