In the whirlwind of city living, where the hustle and bustle can sometimes be overwhelming, finding moments of serenity becomes essential for our well-being. Enter the world of pet birds - your feathered friends that promise to bring harmony, companionship, and many health benefits into your home. It's no surprise that countless people are embracing birds as their beloved companions to add a touch of tranquillity to their busy schedules.

These captivating creatures offer delightful company, and numerous studies have unveiled the extraordinary bond between humans and their avian pals, leading to a treasure trove of health advantages. One of the most striking benefits is reducing stress and anxiety levels. The mere presence of a feathered friend can work wonders, lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, allowing you to unwind and find solace amid life's demands.

Why birds make perfect companions?

Birds are fascinating, entertaining, and popular as pets because of their high intelligence. They are simple to train and can quickly master feats that impress even the most jaded of your bird-loving friends. In addition to being cute, birds only take up a little room, making them a great option for people living in cramped quarters.

And if you're looking for a low-maintenance pet, birds are a great option compared to the average cat or dog. While you're at work or otherwise occupied, they'll be content to hang out in their cages and require only occasional brushing.

Enchanted by the kaleidoscope of colours and the captivating nature of these avian beauties, Adeela Afzal, a Dhaka University Student, eagerly brought some delightful birds into her life, becoming their devoted pet parent for several years. Growing up alongside them, she cherishes every moment spent in their company.

"Their melodic chirping is a delightful treat to my ears," Adeela exclaimed with a smile. "In their cozy cages, they enjoy playful moments with certain toys, showcasing their intelligence through tricks and antics."

These birds have become her beloved friends and bring life and liveliness to her home, creating a haven of joy and happiness. Her collection of budgies and love birds has been a lifelong fascination since childhood. "Their colourful nature always intrigued me since childhood," shared Adeela.

Upon reaching out to another bird owner, Ismat Ara Kaifa, she revealed the heartwarming story behind her endearing companions, the Green-CheekedConure and Budgies. "My birds give me company. I play with them and they emotionally bond with everyone instantly. Such lovely creatures!"

Taking care of these feathery beauties

Birds require less attention and cost less to feed than some other pets. However, having easy access to a veterinarian is crucial for treating them when they're sick.

"When one of my birds is sick, I give it whatever medication I have on hand that was given by the vet; if that doesn't work, I rush it to the doctor as soon as possible." Said Adeela

When questioned about the same matter, Kaifa stated, "I have 15+ medications for emergencies, and we also bring them to doctors as needed."

Concerning their diet, Adeela mentioned, "When it comes to feeding them, they mostly depend on seeds, mixed fruits, vegetables, and nuts. I ensure that my birds are getting enough seed mix and veggies regularly. Besides that, I give them eggs twice a week."

Safe and stimulating environment for pet birds

"I have many birds, which allowed me to ensure they have their separate room. They have certain toys in their cages that allow them to play and do tricks.", mentioned Adeela.

Many birds enjoy staying with humans and giving them company. Be it even within the four walls of a room or their pretty spacious cages, they enjoy playing with toys and moving around in a safe environment within homes.

Zerin offered valuable advice for those considering bringing a bird into their home. "It is essential to ensure you have the right supplies, such as a spacious birdcage, perches, and ladders, allowing your feathered friend to explore and exercise freely. Adequate water, food dishes, and a bird bath should be provided to maintain their health and hygiene."

She also said, "Cage liners make cleaning up a breeze, while a cosy hiding place offers the bird some privacy and relaxation. Most importantly, welcoming your new companion with a variety of toys will keep them mentally stimulated, content, and feeling at home."

The best bird breeds as pet

There are a wide variety of bird breeds to choose from, just as there are many other types of pets. Many avian experts advise beginning with a more manageable species of bird. They won't be as challenging to manage or frightening to look at as they peck at you. Cockatiels and Budgerigars are the greatest choices for first-time bird pets.

When asked for recommendations, Adeela enthusiastically endorsed Budgies as her favourite bird. According to her, "These little birds possess outstanding pet qualities and come with fewer challenges. They are remarkable for their intelligence and love for interaction and learning."

We asked the same question to Zerin who owns a Cockatiel; she mentioned, "Cockatiels require a lot of attention. But if you can offer them so, they are a must-have because who wouldn't love a cute little happy friend who'd sing you songs every day."

Should we pet birds or set them free?

Birds are undeniably a part of nature. However, not every bird enjoys the perils of nature. Some are better off with a human as a parent.

This is why Kaifa put her point of view as, "Honestly, these types of birds won't survive outside. So, to let them suffer outside is not very humane. They are not native birds."

"I didn't think much when I bought them as I was quite young. I do realise such beautiful creatures shouldn't be allowed to be captured. But freeing them now would just bring death to them," said Adeela

The most popular types of birds to pet are Budgerigars, Lovebirds, Cockatiels, Finches, and Parrots. Birds as pets are the perfect mix of cute and funny. These individuals need caring parents and will show you their love and gratitude.

If you've ever wished for a little piece of paradise in the middle of the city, a pet bird could be the answer you've been looking for. Having these delightful beings in your life will undoubtedly lift your spirits and improve the quality of your days.
