A total of 4,79,320 vehicles are now plying without fitness certificates across the country, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has said in a report.

In the report submitted to the High Court on Tuesday as per the latter's June 24 order,  the state-run transport agency said those vehicles were registered but their registration has expired.

Giving a breakdown of the unfit vehicles, it said 2,61,113 are in Dhaka division, 1,19,588 in Chattogram, 26,240 in Rajshahi, 6,588 in Rangpur, 15,668 in Khulna, 44,805 in Sylhet and 5,338 in Barishal.

The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Habibul Alam is expected to pass an order on the report following hearing later in the day, local media reports say.

The court, while hearing a suo moto rule on June 24, received a brief report from the BRTA on the unfit vehicles running across the country, and asked for a detailed report that was submitted this day.

Studies and investigations show that unfit vehicles are a key reason behind road accidents that take place across the country every day.
