1.1m hectares of cropland to be protected from floods

The National Adaptation Plan (NAP) implementation will help in protecting 1.1 million hectares of cropland from floods, which ultimately will raise rice production in the country, according to the environment ministry.

The vulnerability of about 1.5 million climate refugees will also be reduced while tree coverage will increase at least 5.0 per cent. Blue economy will be enriched and overall carbon emissions will be reduced.

Officials of the ministry said this in the final validation workshop on NAP organised at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Sunday.

Secretary of the ministry Farhina Ahmed said “if the plan is successfully implemented, about 1.1 million hectares of cropland will be protected from storm-rain, flood floods, tidal, sea level rise and protection from salinity.”

She also said annual production of 10.3 million tonnes of rice will be increased per capita nutrition from cattle and fisheries; frequent infrastructure protection will be ensured from frequent climate disasters.

About 30 million people in the city area will be benefited from the development of drainage management and heat waves. 10 per cent of the transportation costs will be reduced.

Environment secretary said that 15 per cent of expenses will be reduced to the treatment of mosquitoes and water-borne diseases, and the income of the city's marginalised population will increase by 30 per cent.

Environment Minister Md Shahab Uddin said that if the NAP is implemented then the execution of long-term coordinated adaptation activities to tackle climate change Climate change will be easier to deal with.

Proper strategies have been identified and implementing specific adaptation needs for Bangladesh. This plan is not only a national report, but it will highlight our position in the world of climate adaptation, the minister added.

The adoption and adaptation activities will be implemented in national adaptation plans through the combined efforts of various ministries and organisations and related partners.

Ministry's Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, Senior Secretary of Water Resources Ministry Kabir Bin Anwar, Economic Relations Division Secretary Sharifa Khan, National Project Director of NAP Preparation Project Md Mizanul Hoque Chowdhury and UNDP Bangladesh Residential Representative Stefan Liller, participated in the event.
