1,200 unemployed transport workers receive relief items in city

At least 1,200 transport workers, who became unemployed during the ongoing lockdown, received relief items on Sunday.

Khondaker Enayet Ullah, secretary-general of the Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity (Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association) and also Managing Director of ENA Transport Limited, handed over the food items to the workers at a programme at the city's Mohakhali bus terminal.

He distributed the food items including rice, potatoes, oil, pulses and onions from his own funds, according to a press release.

Speaking on the occasion, Khondaker Enayet Ullah said that all public transport has been shut down due to the restrictions announced by the government to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

In this situation, he also urged all the transport owners, the owners' association and the leaders of the transport companies to come forward in their respective places in such tough time.

He further said that transport workers are paid if they work. As a result, they do not get paid for the few days due to the lockdown situation.

Dhaka District Bus-Minibus Road Transport Workers Union President Sadiqur Rahman Hiru, Executive President Osman Ali, General Secretary Md Shahidullah Sadu, Mohakhali Bus Terminal Owners’ Association President Mohammad Abul Kalam, Vice-President Shawkat Ali Babul and General Secretary Abdul Malek, among others, were present at the function.

Earlier, Bangladesh announced an eight-day complete lockdown till April 21.
