15pc VAT on Metro Rail ticket prices from July 1

Updated :

Metro Rail passengers will have to count 15 per cent VAT on their fare starting from July 1, 2024.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) will impose the VAT as the VAT exemption period on MRT tickets will expire on June 30, 2024.

In a letter to the MRT authority on Thursday, the NBR expressed its inability to allow further exemption on MRT tickets.

The NBR offered the VAT exemption to MRT passengers starting on December 28, 2022.

UNB adds: Earlier, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) requested NBR to extend the period.

The second secretary of NBR's VAT Division Barrister Md. Badruzzaman Munshi sent a letter to the managing director of the DMTCL in this regard.

However, freedom fighters and children with three feet height can travel free of charge, and people with special needs can travel on metro rail at a 10 to 15 per cent discount on the ticket prices.
