Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Sunday seized 160,000 pieces of yaba tablets in a raid in the Mirzajora area in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar.

Acting on a tip-off that a large consignment of narcotics might enter Bangladesh from Myanmar through the Mirzajora area, 800 yards southeast of the border pillar, BGB's Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB) immediately deployed special patrols at several strategic locations along the embankment, Naf River and areas adjacent to Mirzajora.

At the same time, another naval patrol from BGB's Damdamiya BOP secretly took position in a phantom boat on the Naf River near MIrzajora, reports BSS citing a BGB press release.

Around 5:30 pm on Sunday, the BGB team noticed a boat moving suspiciously in Myanmar waters and started following it.

The BGB patrol identified two suspected smugglers whose movements appeared suspicious.

Sensing the presence of BGB personnel, the smugglers fled after hiding two plastic bags near a fish enclosure adjacent to the Keora forest.

After a long search, the BGB team recovered 1,60,000 yaba tablets wrapped in two plastic bags hidden inside the Keora forest, the release added.

Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the smuggling.

A case has been filed with Teknaf Model Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.
