At least 179 construction workers lost lives in accidents at different under-construction sites last year in the country.

Bangladesh Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE) revealed the information in its Annual Workplace Safety Report 2017.

The study also said 42 other workers were injured in several incidents at construction sites.

Lack of safety equipment and also the trend of work in hazardous situation is major reason behind such losses, the study said.

The report also mentioned that lack of monitoring mechanism in the sector has been fuelling up risks of casualties.

The trend of unsafe workplace was similar in 2017 as it was in immediate past, it said.

In 2016, a total of 147 construction workers were killed in construction sector.

According to OSHE report, a total of 1509 workers died in the construction industry in a decade-- between 2008 and 2017.
