Eighteen journalists have received the Migration Media Award 2025 in recognition of their significant contributions to investigative journalism in the migration sector.
The awards were presented on Thursday, marking International Migrants Day, at a ceremony held at a city hotel.
The Ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh, Michael Miller, attended the event as the chief guest and handed over the awards to the winners.
To recognise quality journalism on migration issues, BRAC introduced the Migration Media Award in Bangladesh in 2015.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the award.
In the national daily newspaper category, Rajib Ahmed of Daily Samakal won first prize, Russell Ahmed of Kaler Kantho secured second prize, while Kaniz Fatema of The Business Standard and Md Mohiuddin of Prothom Alo jointly won third prize.
In the online category, The Business Standard senior staff correspondent Kamran Siddiqui, special correspondent Jasim Uddin—currently working for The Financial Express—and senior feature writer Saleh Shafique jointly won first prize for their long-read story, “How expats’ money reshaping lives in villages.”
Raihan Ahmed of JagoNews24 secured second prize, while Md Abdullah of Banglavision won third prize in the category.
In the television news category, Samrat Hossain of Channel 24 won first prize, followed by Masuda Khatun of News 24 in second place and Sajid Arafat of Ekhon TV in third place.
In the investigative television programme category, Talash of Independent Television received the award, which was accepted by Md Nazmul Sayed and Rakibul Hasan.
In the radio category, Badsha Mia, Dhaka bureau chief of Radio Tehran, received the award.
In the regional newspaper category, Tarikul Islam Mohammad Hasan of Banglar Potrika won first prize, Mohammad Sharif Iqbal of Daily Grameen Darpan came second, and Ayesha Siddika of Daily Subarnagram secured third place.
The winners were presented with honour crests, certificates and prize money cheques.
Special guests at the event included Max Tunon, Head of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Bangladesh, and Dr A T M Mahbub-ul Karim, Joint Secretary and Project Director of the RAISE Project under the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
The keynote paper was presented by Shahed Muhammad Ali, Editor of Daily Samakal. The event was chaired by Asif Saleh, Executive Director of BRAC, while the welcome address and an overview of the current migration scenario in Bangladesh were delivered by Shariful Hasan, Associate Director (Migration and Youth Platform) at BRAC.
The awards are being presented under the Prottasha II Project, jointly funded by the European Union and BRAC.
Presenting the awards, EU Ambassador Michael Miller said journalists play a crucial role in bringing forward the voices of migrants. Emphasising the need to curb irregular migration from Bangladesh and ensure accountability, he said migration must be safe. Under the Europe Talent Partnership, Europe will legally recruit skilled and semi-skilled workers from Bangladesh, while the reintegration of returnees should also be prioritised by destination countries.
