1st Phase Upazila Polls: 70pc of chairman candidates businesspersons, says TIB

About 70 per cent of the candidates vying for the chairman position in the first phase of the sixth Upazila Parishad elections are businesspersons, according to the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
Of those candidates, 94 have immovable assets worth Tk 10 million, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) told a press conference in Dhaka city on Monday based on the analysis of affidavits submitted by the candidates to the Election Commission (EC).
In the last Upazila Parishad elections, 37 candidates had assets worth Tk 10 million; this election, the number has nearly tripled, Transparency International's Bangladesh chapter added.
A total of 152 upazilas around the country are set to go to the polls in the first phase on May 8, according to the EC.
