A total of 2,208 people with coronavirus (Covid-19) symptoms died in the last nine and a half months from March 22, 2020 to January 9, 2021 across the country, according to a report.

Of them, 1,772 were males and 436 females, showed the report prepared by a project styled as 'Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO)' under Centre for Genocide Studies at Dhaka University.

However, only three people died with such symptoms from December 13 to January 9 showing an extreme downward trend of mortalities, the BPO report unveiled.

Some 407 people were reported to be slapped with fines during the period while no people were arrested on any terms, the report said.

Some 1,629 people were slapped with fines and 159 people were detained on different terms for violating the government’s health rules from November 29 to December 12, reads the report.

The peace observatory project has prepared the report based on information from 25 media outlets, including national and local dailies, TV channels, and news portals. However, this information was not verified from the field level.

The BPO project has been regularly publishing reports on multiple issues with financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

District administrations, in recent times, have become vigilant to maintain health guidelines in their respective areas after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's warning about the possible second wave of coronavirus pandemic in Bangladesh during this winter season.

According to the report, during the period under review, Dhaka division saw 394 deaths with Covid-19-like symptoms while the number of similar deaths recorded in the Chattogram division was 733. Mymensingh division had 61 such deaths, the lowest record, added the BPO report.

Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, and Barishal divisions reported 102, 223, 95, 356, and 244 deaths respectively.
