229 people died in road accidents during Eid holidays

At least 229 people were killed and 318 others injured in road accidents across the country during Eid-ul Azha holidays, according to a report released by Road Safety Foundation (RSF) on Tuesday.

The report also stated that some 187 road accidents took place in the last 14 days (July 26 to August 8).

Among the deceased, 28 were women and 23 children. Road accidents also took lives of 23 drivers and assistants.

Both accidents and deaths increased in Eid-ul Azha than that of Eid-ul Fitr, RSF data said.

The statistics showed some 128 accident were took place where 147 people died in Eid-ul Fitr.  

The RSF prepared the statistics by collecting reports of seven national dailies and five online news portals and visual media.

Some 305 vehicles were responsible for the road accidents during the time, added the report.

Of the total death, 96 people died in 81 motorcycle crashes which is 41.92 per cent of the entire deaths during the period, said the report,

The highest number of accidents took place in Dhaka division with highest number of deaths. Some 37 people were killed in Dhaka division, the report showed.

As a district Mymansing was the top in number of death with 16 people.

About 36.89 per cent accidents occurred on highways, 34.22 on internal, 17.64 on village and 11.22 on urban roads. 

Besides, the number of waterway accidents was 27 where 66 people died, 24 were wounded and 13 went missing. Three were killed in three railway accidents.

Lack of skill and mental and physical illness, irregular wages and working hours, unfit vehicles, rash driving, inadequate benefits for drivers, slow movement of vehicles on the highways, reckless bike ride by youths, improper traffic management system and lack of awareness about traffic laws were responsible for the accidents, the organisation said.

It suggested increasing skilled drivers, strengthening the capability of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and enforcement of the existing laws to check road accidents in the country.
