230 hectares of land come under early winter bean production in Natore

NATORE, Oct 25: Early winter bean farming becomes boon for hundreds of grassroots farmers in the district this season.
A good number of farmers said repeated bumper yield and lucrative market prices are the main reasons for the popularity of the vegetable.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said some 230 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the vegetable this season.
DAE officials said many growers in the have attained financial solvency by growing the item commercially. They started harvesting the vegetable from the last week of September and will continue until December.
In a recent visit to different areas in the district this correspondent found that farmers were working hard in their bean field to get a good yield.
Early winter beans have been started appearing in the local markets in a small scale.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer Abul Basar said many growers have shifted to bean farming from paddy for high profit.
Farmer Shafiqul Islam of Boraigram upazila said he cultivated bean on 12 decimals of land spending Tk 3,500. He has already earned Tk 6,000 from the sale and expecting Tk 8,900 more.
Local farmers and traders have demanded that if the government builds a vegetable cold storage in the area, they can preserve their agricultural products easily.
Deputy director of DAE Rafiqul Islam said early-winter bean was cultivated abundantly in the district. The farmers of the district are getting a good yield and fair market prices this season, he added.
