Police have arrested 25 individuals in various parts of Chattogram city on charges of holding a procession and chanting slogans following the funeral of Awami League (AL) presidium member and former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain.

The arrests were made during day-long drives on Thursday by Kotwali and Khulshi police.

Two separate cases have been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the incidents.

According to a media release from the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), Kotwali police arrested 19 members of the now-banned AL and its affiliate organisations during raids across different neighbourhoods.

Khulshi police, on the other hand, detained six individuals from various areas under their jurisdiction.

The funeral prayer for the veteran freedom fighter took place at the Jamiatul Falah Mosque grounds at 11:15am on Thursday.

Thousands of people from various walks of life began gathering at the venue from 10am to pay their last respects.

The situation escalated shortly after the prayer concluded.

As the body was being placed into an ambulance, a large group of political associates and followers surrounded the vehicle and began chanting slogans.

The police intervention came as the government maintains a ban on activities related to the AL.

Authorities said the procession violated existing restrictions, leading to the filing of the anti-terrorism cases.

Mosharraf, a prominent figure in the liberation war and a long-standing leader of the AL, was laid to rest following the tribute.
