28 martyred, 197 injured in Uttara during July-August uprising

A total of 28 people lost their lives and 197 were injured in Dhaka’s Uttara during the July-August mass uprising.

The list was released by a group named ‘Chobbisher Uttara’ during a press conference at Milestone College in Uttara Sector 11 on Saturday morning.

It was handed over to Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, the general secretary of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation and the elder brother of martyr Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho.

The organisation took the initiative to ensure proper recognition for the martyrs and to secure treatment for the injured.

The list provides details of 226 individuals, including 28 martyrs, 197 injured, and 1 missing.

The highest number of casualties occurred on Jul 18 and Aug 5, with most incidents reported near the BNS, Azampur, and Uttara East Police Station, as revealed during the conference.

According to the information provided, 19 students were among the dead, with others from different professions, including small traders, tailors, drivers, security guards, restaurant staff, teachers, workers, fruit vendors, shop owners, day labourers, and garment workers. Most of the dead and injured sustained injuries to the head, thighs, eyes, legs, waist, and ribs.

The organisation mentioned that rubber bullets were fired, and police and Chhatra League members used sticks and batons against the protesters.

Monisha Mafruha, a member of Chobbisher Uttara, said: “There are 109 bullet-related casualties, 102 from rubber bullets, and 30 from other causes. Among the dead, 19 are students. A total of 194 people received hospital treatment, while 10 sought primary care at pharmacies, and 8 were treated at clinics.”

In addition, 13 people require urgent eye care, and 34 need treatment for bullet wounds.

Of the 226 affected, 204 have medical documentation, while 12 do not; 11 have received treatment at home.

Out of the 226, 199 people require assistance, while 28 do not need any.

In addition, 157 individuals need financial aid, 83 require medical treatment, and 64 seek livelihood support, with 24 needing no assistance.

Out of the 226, a total of 164 have not received any support.

During the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, there were widespread clashes between protestors and police in the Uttara area.
