As many as 321 publishers have said they will not participate in the Amar Ekushey Book Fair, citing concerns over “potential lack of readers, humanitarian disasters, and financial risks”.
In a joint statement, they expressed that due to the post-2026 national election climate and the month of Ramadan, it is impossible for them to participate in a February fair while facing such “business and humanitarian risks”.
These publishers, however, have shown an interest in “spontaneously” participating if the fair is held after Eid-ul-Fitr, stating they will provide “all possible cooperation” to the authorities to ensure the event’s success.
The fair is scheduled to begin on Feb 20.
