The Dhaka-bound Intercity Mohanagar Express from Chattogram has lost five coaches near Ashuganj station in Brahmanbaria before its engine also broke down.
Train guard KM Shahinur Islam said the incident occurred at 5:35pm on Monday.
No casualties were reported, and train movement on the down line remained normal.
Assistant Station Master Sakir Jahan told bdnews24.com at 7:30pm that the train had left Brahmanbaria Railway Station at 5:15pm.
He said since the station was nearby, passengers from the detached coaches boarded the rest of the coaches that stayed put, and the train continued towards Dhaka.
However, the engine eventually broke down on Meghna Bridge in Bhairab.
Later, the locomotive of the Karnaphuli Express, which was at the other end of the bridge, came to tow the Intercity Mohanagar Express.
Sakir said the train reached Bhairab station at around 8pm.
