6 die in Rangpur over 3 days after ‘drinking bootleg alcohol’

Two more people have died of alcohol poisoning after drinking “bootleg alcohol” in Rangpur, leading to a tally of six deaths from alcohol over three days in the district. Two others have been hospitalised.

The bodies were recovered around midnight on Tuesday and sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem, said Azad Rahman, chief of Hazirhat Police Station of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

The two most recent deaths have been identified as Abdul Malek, who hails from Badarganj Upazila, and Rashedul Islam, who hails from Rangpur’s Sadar Upazila.

Around midnight on Sunday, several people drank "bootleg alchohol" at the house of a narcotics trader in the Shyampurhat area of Badarganj Upazila. Several of them later fell ill.

Three people died on Sunday - Alamgir Hossain and Sohel Mia from Badarganj Upazila and Jannat Ali of Rangpur Sadar Upazila.

In addition, several others were secretly receiving treatment at different locations after falling ill. Police have since arrested local resident Zainul Abedin, who law enforcers have identified as a narcotics dealer.

Locals say that Zainul sold liquor and spirits. The deceased bought liquor from his house on Sunday night and drank it. Later, they fell ill and died after returning home.

Another man died of alcohol poisoning in the Balarbazar area of Hazirhat Thana on Monday evening.

The deceased, 60-year-old Manik Chandra Roy (60), hailed from the Sadar Kotwali Thana area.
