A 65-year-old man has been killed in an attack following arbitration over his son’s alleged extramarital affair in Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj Upazila.
The incident occurred around 11pm on Sunday in Court Bazar of Shibganj municipality, Inspector SM Shakil Hasan confirmed.
The dead, Anisur Rahman, was a resident of the Dewan Jaigir Mohalla.
Among the injured, Anisur’s son Asmaul Haque, 35, is undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, while his brother Mansur Ali, 68, is admitted to the Shibganj Upazila Health Complex.
Two other sons, Rabbikul Haque, 33, and Abdul Awal Haque, 30, received primary care.
Police and local sources stated that the clash involved a long-standing dispute between two families over an alleged extramarital affair involving Awal and a woman from the same neighbourhood.
Sunday’s arbitration followed several earlier attempts to resolve the issue.
The Sunday session ended without a resolution as well.
Anisur and his family members began their journey home.
"A group from the woman’s family, armed with sticks, intercepted and attacked them on the way," said the victim's nephew, identified only as Rubel.
Anisur reportedly died on the spot after being struck with a blunt object during the ensuing chase and counter-chase.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for postmortem.
"We are conducting raids to arrest those involved in the killing," said Inspector Shakil.
