The death toll from dengue fever rose by nine, including five from Dhaka, in 24 hours to Saturday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the additional deaths, the casualties rose to 537, including 396 from Dhaka.

Meanwhile, 1,960 hospitalisations were recorded during the same period across the country, including 833 from Dhaka.

The ever-worsening situation of the mosquito-borne disease showed no sign of improvement with the growing deaths and cases.

The health authorities also continued to report a growing number of new cases from outside Dhaka. DGHS reported 1,127 new cases of hospitalisation outside Dhaka.

Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the second highest in the history of the country.

Meanwhile, the total dengue cases rose to 112,184, including 53,489 from Dhaka.

A total of 8,236 people, including 3,846 were from Dhaka, were being treated in the hospitals across the country. Of the total admitted, 103,411 patients recovered and returned home, including 49,247 from Dhaka.

Meanwhile, the UN World Health Organization (WHO) urged swift action as dengue cases surge in Bangladesh.

“The higher incidence of dengue is taking place in the context of an unusual episodic amount of rainfall, combined with high temperatures and high humidity, which have resulted in an increased mosquito population throughout Bangladesh,” WHO said recently.
