Around 94 per cent women face sexual harassment in public transport, a study has revealed.
BRAC, the largest non-governmental development organisation, conducted the survey in association with the BRAC University.
The research result was published at a programme titled ‘Sexual harassment and accident-free transport for women’ held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Sixty-six per cent women surveyed said sexual harassments were mainly committed by men aged between 41 and 60.
The study identified lack of law enforcement, overcrowded public transports with inadequate lighting and lack of proper monitoring and supervision as the major causes for sexual misconduct.
Prof Syed Saad Andaleeb, Prof Simeen Mahmud and others conducted the survey between April and June in 2017.
A total of 415 women shared their personal experiences during the survey.
Eighty-one per cent women surveyed said they prefer to remain silent when they go through the bad experience and 79 per cent said they change their seat or move elsewhere if standing rather than raising their voice against the harassment.
The research observed that lack of co-education schools, proper education and guidance plays a role in showing no respect to women.
