Md Abdullah, a college student who was shot during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests on Aug 5, has died at a hospital in Dhaka.
He died at 7:30 am on Thursday while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital, said Abdullah’s father Abdul Jabbar.
The 23-year-old was a political science student at Government Shahid Suhrawardy College. His family hail from Jashore’s Benapole, reports bdnews24.com.
“On Oct 10, doctors performed a surgery on him at CMH,” Jabbar said. “The operation was a success. A few days after the surgery, my son was walking alongside me. We ate together. Then, 20-22 days ago, he fell sick again. This morning, he went away for good.”
Sub-Inspector Moniruzzaman of the Cantonment Police Station said Abdullah’s body had been taken from the CMH to Suhrawardy Hospital for an autopsy.
After the autopsy, Abdullah’s father said: “He is being bathed in Mohammadpur. We will then take him to his college, where funeral prayers will be held. We will take him back to our village home after funeral prayers at the Shaheed Minar after Maghrib. He will be laid to rest there.”
Shariful Islam, a computer operator at Suhrawardy College, said: “We have sent a notice to all teachers and students about Abdullah’s death. Funeral prayers will be held for him on the college campus after Asr prayers and at the Central Shaheed Minar after Maghrib prayers.”
Tahmid Al Muddassir Chowdhury, a convener of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, said: “Md Abdullah, who was shot during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, has been martyred. Many members of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement will be present at the funeral prayers after Maghrib.”
Abdullah took an active part in the anti-quota protests, which began in July and eventually transformed into a movement that toppled the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.
On Aug 5, the day Hasina fled the country for India, Abdullah was shot in the head outside the Bangshal Police Station in Dhaka’s Tantibazar intersection.
He was lying on the road for two to three hours before he was taken first to Mitford Hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
After an operation that night, doctors assured that he was healthy. A few days later, after he was released, his family took him home.
He was admitted to DMCH again when his condition deteriorated. Then, he was transferred to the CMH for advanced treatment on Aug 22. There, he underwent surgery as well and eventually died.
