The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) announced on Sunday that it has launched an investigation into Md Matiur Rahman, a National Board of Revenue (NBR) official.
A three-member committee will investigate allegations of corruption, including illegal asset acquisition and money laundering, against Rahman, said ACC Secretary Khurshida Yasmin at a press briefing in Dhaka city on Sunday.
While the probe’s announcement coincides with the recent controversy surrounding Rahman’s son Mushfiqur Rahman’s purchase of a reportedly 1.5 million taka goat, Ms Yasmin disclosed that the decision to investigate predates this by weeks, dating back to June 4.
Earlier in the day, Rahman, facing scrutiny, was removed from his position as president of the NBR's Customs, Excise, and VAT Appellate Tribunal.
He also holds a director position at Sonali Bank PLC, where the board the same day advised him to skip its meeting.
Sources say Rahman may be removed from the bank director role this week.
