The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) asked the police to enforce arrest warrants against deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Joy by initiating procedures through Interpol Red Notice alert.
In a letter signed by ACC Deputy Director (Legal and Prosecution-2) MA Rashedul Hasan and issued on September 3, the anti-graft watchdog instructed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Interpol wing of Bangladesh Police to act in line with a Dhaka court order.
The move follows warrants of arrest issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court on August 14, 2025 in connection with an ACC case.
In the case, Hasina and Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy have been accused of "amassing wealth beyond known sources of income and committing other financial crimes" that fall under the purview of multiple sections of the Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947.
"Both the accused are currently abroad and have ignored repeated court summons, prompting the urgent need for Interpol's Red Notice alert," the ACC letter reads.
To facilitate the process, the commission included detailed information on Sajeeb Wazed Joy, including his national ID number, passport number, and permanent address.
Officials say the police headquarters will now forward the request to the Interpol National Central Bureau (NCB), Dhaka, which will process the Red Notice application to alert global law-enforcement agencies.
This happens to be the first time the ACC has formally sought Interpol cooperation to arrest Hasina and Joy in connection with a corruption case.
The ex-premier, who has been in self-exile after her ouster in the mass uprising last year, also faces a raft of cases on various charges that include 'crimes against humanity' now on trial in the International Crimes Tribunal, Dhaka.
