The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will monitor disbursement of relief goods for needy people under different social safety net programmes to detect potential irregularities and misappropriation.

The commission instructed all its 22 integrated district offices (IDOs) to coordinate with respective district administrations to intensively scrutinise relief disbursement process, according to an ACC statement issued on Friday.

In this regard, ACC chairman Iqbal Mahmood said, “In the time of national crisis, the commission will not tolerate any kind of corruption and irregularities in any social safety net programmes.”

He said, “If anyone accumulates wealth through embezzling relief goods allocated for disadvantaged population, the anti-graft agency will bring them under the rule of law.”

No one will be allowed to devour the income came from unknown and illegal sources, he added.

The ACC has been informed through its own intelligence and media reports that some people get involved in misappropriating relief goods meant for needy people ahead of lockdown due to coronavirus outbreak, the statement noted.

Numerous news reports have revealed that many of the local political leaders, district representatives and petty thieves are involved in stealing relief goods, especially rice to be sold at Tk 10 per kg.

Law enforcement agencies have so far arrested at least two dozen individuals from different districts in charge of stealing relief goods.
