The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved filing a case against Gulsan Ara Mia, wife of Awami League publicity secretary Md Abdus Sobhan Mia alias Golap, for failing to submit her wealth statement within the given deadline.

On Tuesday, ACC Director General Akhter Hossain confirmed this to journalists at the commission’s head office in the city.

According to the ACC, on April 15 this year, an order was issued asking Gulsan Ara Mia to submit her wealth statement.

She later applied for an extension on July 23. Considering her request, the ACC granted 15 additional working days, setting the new deadline in August. However, she still failed to submit the report within the extended time.

The ACC Director General said that since she did not comply with the order to submit the statement either within the original or extended deadline, the commission has approved a case against her.

Earlier, on March 19, the ACC filed a case against Abdus Sobhan Golap for allegedly amassing illegal assets worth over Tk 1.00 billion.

Case documents stated that Golap possessed wealth worth Tk 683 million beyond his known income sources, and transactions of Tk 970 million were recorded through 51 bank accounts linked to him.

On January 19 this year, a court ordered the seizure of all movable and immovable properties belonging to Golap, his wife Gulsan Ara Mia, son Evan Sobhan Mia, and daughter Anisha Golap Mia. Their bank accounts were also frozen.

Law enforcement arrested Abdus Sobhan Golap on August 25 last year in West Nakhalpara.

Golap was elected as a Member of Parliament from Madaripur-3 in December 2018 under the Awami League ticket. Later, in December 2023, he was appointed as the party’s central publicity and publication secretary during the AL’s national council.
