Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has vowed action against candidates who have experienced an unusual increase in their wealth.
“Action will be taken after the elections, even if it is not possible now....the government is only doing its routine work at the moment,” Quader said at a press conference at the party’s central office in Dhanmondi this afternoon, local media reported.
He was responding to a question at a press conference held at the party’s central office in Dhanmondi, which referenced a recent report by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
According to the TIB report, a record 571 candidates in the upcoming elections have declared movable assets worth over Tk 10 million or more.
This figure is up from 274 candidates in 2008 and 522 in 2018.
TIB questioned the authenticity of the income, wealth, loans, and debts reported by the candidates to the Election Commission.
Moreover, in its report, TIB made a specific allegation against an unnamed minister.
This minister is involved in undisclosed overseas real estate businesses and possesses total assets valued at approximately Tk 23.12 billion, according to the TIB report.
