A Dhaka court on Monday sent popular actor Nusraat Faria to jail in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the July-August uprising.

Judge Sarah Farzana Haque of the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka passed the order.

The court also fixed May 22 this year to hold a hearing for the bail petition filed by Nusraat.

Earlier that day, Sub-Inspector Billal Bhuiyan of Bhatara Police Station in Dhaka, who is also the investigation officer of the case, presented her before the court seeking her confinement in jail.

During the proceedings, Nusraat's lawyer Mohammad Iftekhar Hasan requested her bail, stating that she was not in Bangladesh during the incident that led to the attempted murder case against her.

On the other hand, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi opposed her bail petition, claiming that she was an associate of "fascist Hasina".

After hearing both sides, the judge sent Nusraat to jail and scheduled May 22 for the bail petition hearing.

The investigator was instructed to submit a report before the court verifying the actor's visa-related documents, which were submitted in support of the bail petition.

Nusraat Faria was escorted to the courtroom of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka at 10:00 am under tight security. Throughout the half-hour-long hearing, she remained silent in the dock.

Nusraat Faria was detained by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka on May 18 while attempting to leave for Thailand.

She was then handed over to Bhatara Police Station, who took her to the Detective Branch office for further questioning.
