The report that investigation documents related to the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi were partially burned in a fire at the Detective Branch (DB) office is incorrect, Additional Attorney General (AAG) Arshadur Rauf said on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media this afternoon, Rauf clarified, “The news suggesting that case files were burned is not accurate.”
Earlier, the state had informed the High Court that some documents related to the case, kept in DB custody, had been partially damaged in a fire. Shortly afterward, Rauf addressed the matter and rejected the claim while speaking to journalists.
In a separate statement, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) also refuted the reports broadcast and published by various electronic and print media outlets, stating that the claim of the Sagar-Runi case files being destroyed in a fire was unfounded.
Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, issued the clarification.
