The present government will not tolerate any attempt to attack media houses, said information adviser Nahid Islam on Monday.
Referring to recent demonstrations against a Bangla daily the Prothom Alo the adviser said, “We have been observing a tense situation centring the Prothom Alo for some days. A group of people staged demonstrations in front of the daily today and yesterday”.
“The Rajshahi office of the newspaper was ransacked and demonstrations against the newspaper were held in some areas of the country including Chittagong and Brahmanbaria,” he told a press briefing organised by the press wing of the CA.
“If a section of people has a complaint against a media house, they can express it but that must be done peacefully. We do not support vandalising media houses or creating pressure to shut down any media outlet."
“The government will not tolerate such incident against any media house in the future, and those involved in today’s incidents will be brought to book,” he said.
“Our appeal is that if people have grudges that should be expressed peacefully. People have the freedom to assemble. If they have any specific allegation, they can take legal action,” he said urging people not to take part in anarchy.
“We should refrain from creating any incident which may harm the image of the country,” he added.
