Agriculture diploma students staged demonstration in front of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) at Khamarbari in the capital on Monday for realising their eight-point charter of demands.

They observed the programme under the banner of 'Agri Blockade'. It created traffic jam on the nearby roads.

The DAE officials and employees said the agitating students forced them to stay outside and did not allow them to enter into the office.

On Sunday, the students also observed a programme in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in the city - under the banner of 'Agriculture Diploma Students Rights Movement' - for realising their demands.

Its coordinator Asaduzzaman Abir said the authority concerned is yet to issue any circular on their opportunity of pursuing higher education and realising the demands.

They observed 'Agri Blockade' in protest against false assurance and deception of the authority in the name of fulfilling the students' demands. They would not allow doing any agriculture-related activities unless their demands are realised.

He also called upon all agriculture diploma students, either studying in public or private sector institutes, and also the agriculture diploma holders to extend their support to the ongoing movement.

To create skilled manpower for the country's agriculture sector, 18 government-run agriculture institutes and 260 private agriculture colleges are providing four-year diploma course. About 25,000 agriculture diploma students are studying at these institutes.
