A Jubo League leader was killed in a clash between the supporters of Awami League (AL) and BNP over electioneering at Ejbalia under Sadar upazila in Noakhali on Tuesday.

The victim was identified as Mohammad Hanif, a local Jubo League leader.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Sudharam Police Station Anwar Hossain said supporters of Awami League's Noakhali-4 candidate Ekramul Karim Chowdhury and BNP's M Shahjahan were locked into the clash over holding their respective rallies, leaving Hanif critically injured, reports UNB.

He was taken to General Hospital, but the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Witnesses said the supporters of Ekram Chowdhury were preparing to hold a rally in an open field in Ejbalia area while Shahjahan's supporters were holding a meeting at a nearby ground.

At one stage, both the groups brought out processions and attacked each other which continued for about 20 minutes.

OC Anwar said they are still not clear how Hanif died but there are marks of bullet wounds in his legs.

Syed Mohiuddin Abdul Azim, resident medical officer of Noakhali General Hospita, said Hanif might have died due to excessive bleeding as he suffered bullet injuries in his legs.

Meanwhile, Ekram Chowdhury visited the hospital and consoled the family members of Hanif.
