BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has secured bail in nine out of ten cases filed over political violence centring the BNP rally in Dhaka on October 28 last year.
He was rejected bail in only one case filed over the attack on the Chief Justice’s residence.
On Wednesday, bail petitions were submitted in two cases, including the one filed over the attack on CJ’s residence. However, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain granted bail to Amir Khosru in only one case.
Lawyers Md Asaduzzaman and Syed Zainul Abedin Mesbah appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the BNP leader on Wednesday.
Later Zainul Abedin Mesbah said, “The court didn’t grant bail to Amir Khosru in one case filed over the attack on Chief Justice’s residence. Now we will file a bail petition with the Metropolitan Session Judge’s Court in the case.”
“If he gets bail in the case then there will be no bar for him to get released,” said the lawyer.
The cases were filed on charges of killing a police constable, gathering on the street illegally, vandalising vehicles, rioting, snatching a police weapon, damaging properties, assaulting policemen and preventing them from discharging their duties.
On November 3, detectives detained Khosru from the capital’s Gulshan area. Later, he was placed on a six-day remand in connection with a case filed over the death of a police constable in the clash during the grand rally.
