Animal sacrifice continued across the capital on the second day of Eid. As per Islamic rules, Qurbani (sacrificial slaughter) is permissible for two additional days following the Eid.
Many city dwellers choose to perform the ritual on the second day due to a shortage of professional butchers on the first day of Eid.
From Sunday morning (June 8), residents in different areas of Dhaka were seen engaging in Qurbani.
Several city dwellers said the lack of professional butchers and the overcrowding and hassle of Eid day prompted them to delay the sacrifice until the second day.
“We could have used seasonal butchers on Eid day, but they don’t know how to cut the meat properly. There was a shortage of skilled butchers. That’s why we chose to sacrifice animal on the second day,” said Ranjan Ali, a resident of Shewrapara.
Mamun from Taltola echoed similar sentiments, saying, “There was a severe shortage of butchers on Eid day, and their wages were unreasonably high. That’s why we’re doing it today.”
Slaughter and meat processing took place from the early morning in neighbourhoods such as Old Dhaka, Lalbagh, Tikatuli, Mugda, and Basabo.
Meanwhile, both Dhaka North and South City Corporations have undertaken several initiatives to ensure swift removal of waste following the sacrifice.
City corporation workers were engaged in cleaning operations from early Sunday morning with cleanup drives underway in every neighborhood,
